Uxbridge Tame Green Lions

The vagaries of this year fixture list mean that many teams in the Isthmian League South Central division have now played each other twice before Christmas, whilst not having played some at all. Guernsey will probably be glad to not be playing Uxbridge again, as having thrown away a two goal winning position in the return fixture last month, at Honeycroft on Saturday they were no match for the in-form Reds.

Uxbridge began on the front foot, and were soon ahead on 9 minutes, as Ada Okorogheye broke into the box, and cooly slotted home through the keepers legs from a tight angle. The home team then began to boss the possession, with George Moore going close with a header on 15 minutes, and just after Toby Nnadozie also had a good shot well saved. Okorogheye was proving a real thorn in Guernsey’s side, and it was a result of his determination to get into the box on 23 minutes that led to a corner, from which a goalmouth scramble ended with Leo Donnellan stabbing the ball home from close range to double the lead. Guernsey were seeing plenty of the ball, without really troubling the Uxbridge defence, and it was no surprise when the home side extending their lead on 36 minutes, as some neat interplay between Okorgoheye and Casey Bocarro saw the defender calmly slot the ball home from a similar position to the first goal. There was still time for Josh Addae to fire a shot over the bar right on the whistle, but Uxbridge were well in control at the break.

HT 3-0

Any thoughts of a rout were put to bed in the second half, as Guernsey came more into the game - and began to create chances of their own. Samuel Murray cut inside the defence and shot straight at Legg when well placed on 50 minutes, They really should have pulled one back a couple of minutes later when a great cross from Owen Wallbridge found Finlay Du Port unmarked with the goal gaping, but he was unable to connect properly and the ball went wide. The Green Lions, did get a goal though just after the hour, as Charlton Gauvain was played in one on one with Legg, and he slipped the ball past Legg, to bring Guernsey back in to the match. Uxbridge to their credit then switched on, made some changes, and began to exert themselves again. The fourth goal did arrive on 76 minutes as Dontaye Whittaker challenged the keeper from a high ball, and it fell perfectly for James Taylor to knock the ball home to restore the 3 goal advantage. Guernsey’s heads didn't drop and they still managed to fashion chances for goal scorer Gauvain and Finlay Patterson, however it was the Reds afternoon, and one that sees them move up to 6th place - just outside the Play Offs on goal difference.
