Thame Tamed

Seven games unbeaten in all competitions, with six wins has seen Uxbridge move up the league table – whilst also navigating their way into the 1st Round Proper of the FA Trophy – although they were pushed all the way by a confident Thame United side – who had yet to taste defeat on the road – until their visit to Honeycroft on Saturday.

As in previous weeks The Reds started well and had already seen good chances fall to Andrio Brandao and George Moore – before Casey Bocarro saw his shot cannon back off the post on 14 minutes – adding to the numerous times Uxbridge had hit the woodwork recently. The lively Josh Addae was causing the Thame defence all sorts of problems, and it only seemed a matter of time before the home side would score, only to be caught out on 27 minutes when in their first dangerous attack, visiting Captain Mark Riddick headed home from a fine cross by Harry Alexander. Uxbridge continued to push for an equaliser with George Moore going close and Wilson Chingoka seeing his shot skim the bar – but it was Thame who held the advantage at the break.

HT 0-1

That advantage was soon wiped out five minutes into the second half though as once again Josh Addae got to the byline to pull the ball back  - kept out by the feet of keeper Matt Crowther, only for Andrio Brandao to expertly steer home the loose ball. George Moore was proving to be a real thorn in Thame’s side and had seen another shot well saved, before great work by Brandao in the middle of the park to hold off two defenders and fed Moore with an inch perfect pass – Moore took on the keeper and calmly slotted the ball past him to give The Reds the lead on 64 minutes.

The visitors then came more into the game and an almighty goalmouth scramble looked like leading to an equaliser but a combination of last ditch defending and good work from George Legg in the Uxbridge goal just kept the advantage. Ada Okorogheye had worked tirelessly up front all afternoon and looked to have a good shout for a penalty on 81 minutes, however the referee though otherwise – and then the game drifted towards the end. However, there was to be late drama as the clock ticked over to 90 minutes a ball into the Uxbridge box was knocked down & left free by the defence , and Harry Alexander smashed a great volley past Legg, to seemingly take the game to penalties.

The Reds though thought otherwise and with the match into the 7th minute of stoppage time – one last burst into the box from Addae saw a tired challenge from the defender lead to the ref pointing to the spot, and with virtually the last kick of the match substitute Alex Witham coolly slotted away the penalty to take The Reds into the hat for the 1st Round.
