Bonfire night puns aside, there were few fireworks on the field as Uxbridge saw off a resolute Binfield side 2-1 on Tuesday evening.
Keen to put the disappointment of the Farnham match the previous Saturday behind them, Uxbridge started on the front foot, with an early header from CJ Fearn being parried over the bar by Binfield keeper Coleridge Fubler Jr on just 8 minutes. Binfield though were well organised and starting to create chances, Rahzir Smith-Jones went close on the quarter hour, but his shot was narrowly over. A warning the Reds didn’t heed though, as on 19 minutes a fine break on the left-hand side by Danel Fosu saw him get to the byline and pull the ball back for Smith-Jones to tuck home and give Binfield the advantage. George Moore then started to exert his influence on the match as the half wore on with a shot just past the post and then a header just wide. Just after the half hour saw the best chance so far, as a lopping cross from Josh Addae came back off the bar with the keeper beaten, only for a combination of luck and last-minute defending preventing the rebound being put in by Ada Okorogheye. A frustrating half for the home side was seemingly coming to an end, when on 43 minutes Moore broke clear from a fine Leo Decabo pass to round the keeper and expertly steer the equaliser home.
HT 1-1
The two sides were cancelling each other out as the second half started, with neither being able to create any meaningful chances. This changed on 53 minutes, when the lively Addae made a trademark run into the box, as he got to the byline the defender took him down, and the Reds had a spot kick. Addae himself stepped up to send Fubler Jr the wrong way – and Uxbridge had the lead. Binfield came closest to an equaliser on 58 minutes as Toby Nnadozie cleared a well-placed header off the line from Binfield’s Luke Wayborn. Okorogheye had Uxbridge’s best chance of extending their lead as he broke clear of the defence on 71 minutes, but he was crowded out by the recovering defence before he could get a shot off. The visitors had one more good chance when Richard Jones Jr hit a dipping shot just wide.
However, Uxbridge held on to pick up an important three points and move on to a trip to Badshot Lea on Saturday.
