Match Report: Bluebells Wilt as Reds Cast Second Half Spell
Uxbridge 2–0 Yate Town | Pitching In Southern League Premier South
Saturday 31 October 2026 | Attendance: 346
I'm not inclined to use many clichés in my match reports, however, this truly was a game of two vastly different halves, as Uxbridge extended their unbeaten league run to five games—four of those without conceding—with Yate unable to repeat their winning trick of last season, when they stunned Honeycroft with a late 3-1 win. Underpinning Uxbridge’s rise to the top of the table this season has been consistency of selection, with manager Danny Edwards opting to keep the same starting eleven that had won at Basingstoke in midweek. There was a place on the bench for new signing Owen James—a forward who has joined us from Stratford Town and will boost Uxbridge’s attacking options.
The match began slowly with a turgid midfield battle as Uxbridge struggled to establish their rhythm early on. The visitors were able to close down space and press very effectively, with the hosts unable to make any inroads into the Yate defence. There was an early chance on 5 minutes when Joe Lawal cut inside from the right flank. He unleashed a low shot, but Aaron Sainsbury in the Yate goal was well-positioned to gather it comfortably. Midway through the first half, there was an injury scare for the home side, as on 24 minutes, Lawal abruptly pulled up after challenging for a ball in the box. With what looked like a hamstring pull, it appeared his afternoon might be prematurely over. However, Lawal managed to run off the issue and returned to the fray.
The match was devoid of any meaningful goalmouth action at either end, with neither side able to brew up any chances of note. The atmosphere was livened up somewhat on 36 minutes when Yate Town’s James Ollis caught Ciaran Martin with a reckless late lunge that left the Uxbridge man in a heap. On another day it could easily have been a red card; however, the referee only showed a yellow, much to the visitors' relief. Uxbridge intensified their pressure as half-time approached. In the 38th minute, the ball dropped invitingly to Troy Perez-Duah on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder twisted expertly to engineer some space but could only fire his resulting shot well over the crossbar, and Uxbridge entered the dressing rooms at the interval with the scoreline frustratingly blank.
HT 0-0
Whatever was said during the half-time team talk, it yielded an immediate and devastating dividend. Just two minutes into the second half, the breakthrough finally arrived. The ball was fed into Perez-Duah, once again lurking dangerously on the edge of the box. This time, there was no mistake. He turned brilliantly into a pocket of space and unleashed an unstoppable shot that flew past the despairing dive of Sainsbury. It was a strike of the highest quality, giving Uxbridge a fully merited 1-0 lead.
The goal completely altered the complexion of the match, forcing Yate Town to open up and leaving them vulnerable to Uxbridge's pace in transition. In the 50th minute, a raking ball over the top sent Trevan Robinson breaking clear, but the referee controversially halted the attack, adjudging the striker to have fouled the recovering defender. Three minutes later, the hosts fashioned the move of the match. Francis Amartey showcased his electric pace down the left flank, driving past his marker and delivering a wicked, low cross that completely bypassed the retreating Yate defence. The ball ran perfectly for Robinson across the face of goal, but in a moment he won't want to relive, the forward somehow managed to steer his effort wide from barely two yards out.
Uxbridge didn't dwell on the miss, though, and were now in full control of the match. In the 59th minute, Robinson was in the thick of the action again. Latching onto another lofted pass, he superbly held off a Yate defender before firing a shot that forced a sharp save, with the rebound being scrambled away for a corner. Yate Town were hanging on by a thread, though they did offer a rare reminder of their own threat on 61 minutes. Winning possession out wide on the left, the visitors whipped a dangerous cross into a crowded penalty area, but the imperious Jack Burchell was on hand to execute a vital clearance.
Normal service quickly resumed as substitute Olly McCoy began to heavily influence proceedings. On 65 minutes, McCoy drove purposefully to the edge of the area and laid the ball off to Amartey, whose stinging low drive was well parried by Sainsbury. A minute later, a beautiful exchange of passes between Robinson and McCoy concluded with the latter pinging a fierce shot just over the crossbar.
The mounting pressure finally shattered Yate Town's remaining resolve in the 68th minute. Sam Deadfield delivered a pinpoint corner into the penalty area, where the ball was nodded down in the six-yard box. Burchell reacted quickest to the loose ball, lashing it emphatically into the roof of the net to double the advantage.
Rather than resting on their laurels, Uxbridge sought to administer the killer blow. A frantic sequence in the 69th minute saw McCoy break into the box and cut inside, only to see his shot desperately blocked, with Perez-Duah closed down before he could capitalise on the rebound. Seconds later, Amartey tormented the defence once more, but his low strike was repelled. On 78 minutes, Robinson utilised his strength to outmuscle his marker and square the ball for Amartey, whose close-range shot was deflected behind. From the resulting corner, Alan Massey rose highest, but his header deflected agonisingly over the top.
As the clock ticked down, Yate Town desperately pushed for a lifeline. On 82 minutes, they managed a rare breakaway, but the resulting low shot from Joe Guest was comfortably gathered by the ever-reliable Sam Morris in the Uxbridge goal. Moments later, the visitors pressed again, but following a heroic initial block by the outstanding Burchell, the follow-up from Marcus Day was dragged harmlessly wide.
In the 88th minute, McCoy broke down the wing and fired a low cross that evaded everyone, leaving the Yate keeper completely stranded. Finally, in the 92nd minute, McCoy looked to have been forcefully hauled to the ground inside the penalty area. The referee remained unmoved by the vociferous appeals, but the loose ball fell to Toby Nnadozie, who confidently pinged a low, driving shot that whistled just inches past the post.
When the final whistle echoed around Honeycroft, it signalled a comprehensive and highly satisfying 2-0 victory for the Reds. It laid to rest the ghosts of last season's defeat and sets them up nicely for a tricky-looking run of fixtures—with a trip to Plymouth Parkway next up on Tuesday evening.
