Match Report: Ain't No Party Like An Amartey Party!
Uxbridge 1-0 Evesham United | Pitching In Southern League Premier South |
Saturday 10 October 2026 | Attendance: 394
Uxbridge secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory against Evesham United at Honeycroft on Saturday. It’s fair to say the match won't live long in the memory as a spectacle, but it highlighted the resilience and determination within the current squad to eke out a narrow win from a match that looked destined to end in a frustrating, goalless stalemate.
Entering the game, second-placed Uxbridge were high on confidence with an unbeaten home run stretching back to January this year — albeit no doubt with one eye on next week's FA Cup fourth qualifying round match against Hornchurch. With Troy Perez-Duah’s appeal against his red card having failed, leading to a three-match ban, manager Danny Edwards shuffled the pack and handed Trevan Robinson a start. There were two new signings on the bench: Brian Nelson, arriving on a one-month loan from Slough Town, and Gabe George, joining from Hanwell Town to bolster the squad ahead of a busy schedule. Evesham United, sitting comfortably in the top half, arrived in West London determined to bounce back from a defeat at leaders Poole Town last time out.
The match kicked off with a cagey opening exchange. The respective defensive lines dominated early on, closing down space quickly and leaving very little room for creative players to operate. An early tactical disruption hit Evesham United just a minute into the match when Liam Hutt was forced off and replaced by Rocco Sughayer. Despite the sudden change, the Robins adjusted well and maintained a compact defensive shape. Uxbridge tried to establish a rhythm through their midfield, with Cole Brown providing the Reds' best outlet via driving runs down the right wing, but the visiting backline stood firm and denied any clear-cut chances.
Naturally, it was George Moore who provided the initial spark on 14 minutes. Peeling off the back of the pack as a free kick was knocked back to him, his low cross-shot was well held by Oscar Varney in the Evesham goal. Moore fashioned another good chance in the box on 25 minutes, but his fierce shot struck Evesham’s Jyrel Bojang full in the face, prompting a halt in play for treatment. The game became heavily congested in the middle third of the pitch, characterised by hard tackling and direct aerial duels. As the half drew to a close, Evesham began to grow in confidence. Around the 40th minute, the visitors enjoyed their best spell of the half, moving the ball sharply into the final third and asking serious questions of the Uxbridge defence; however, Alan Massey and Jack Burchell provided their usual calm control at the back.
Nevertheless, the home side will feel they should have been ahead before the break after missing two gilt-edged chances. First, on 39 minutes, Sam Deadfield chased a ball to the byline and delivered a fine cross that Luis Le Paih met with a first-time volley. It looked destined for the net, but Varney got a fingertip to it to push the ball onto the crossbar before it was cleared from under the bar. A minute later, Trevan Robinson broke forward and laid the ball off to Moore, whose low shot beat the keeper but hit the post. The ball was cleared once again, leaving the match level at the break.
HT: 0–0
The second half began with renewed energy as Uxbridge emerged from the tunnel with clear intent, moving the ball at a higher tempo to stretch the Evesham defence. The first chance of the half came from a set piece on 49 minutes, when Massey headed narrowly wide from a well-directed Deadfield corner. Anyone who watched the recent Arsenal Women's match against Paris would have experienced a moment of flashback soon after, as an Evesham defender stopped a short goal-kick with his hand — believing it had not been taken and that he was supposed to take it himself. However, the handball infringement went largely unnoticed by the officials, management and players, though not by the eagle-eyed fans behind the goal, and match play carried on regardless. Luis Le Paih departed with a head injury shortly after, replaced by loanee Brian Nelson.
Uxbridge were very much in the ascendancy now. In the 64th minute, Massey again got on the end of a Deadfield corner, but this time glanced his header wide of the opposite post. Four minutes later, Cole Brown’s defence-splitting run led to a pull-back for Moore, but he couldn’t apply the finishing touch and sent his shot narrowly past the post as well. Hearts were in mouths on 80 minutes when a quick, incisive Evesham break saw Sopuru Obieri fire the ball past Sam Morris; however, much to the home side’s relief, play was called back for an earlier foul in the build-up.
Just when a 0–0 draw felt like a certainty, the decisive moment arrived in the 86th minute. Ciaran Martin broke down the left wing and delivered a precise ball into the box. It fell to Deadfield, whose initial shot was blocked, but rebounded nicely for Francis Amartey. He took a touch before firing confidently into the corner of the net to break the visitors' hearts. Uxbridge immediately substituted the goalscorer for new signing Gabe George in the 88th minute to shore up the defence. Evesham threw everything forward during a tense period of stoppage time, but the Red Army held firm without further scares to secure a precious clean sheet and all three points.
Next up are two cup matches: an away fixture against Harrow Borough in the Middlesex Senior Cup on Tuesday, followed by National League side Hornchurch arriving at Honeycroft in the FA Cup next Saturday.
