The penultimate game of the season, where have the last eight months gone! As they say,
“time flies when you’re having fun” and we have certainly had some fun this season,
whatever transpires over the next five days. What a difference a year makes. This time last season Southall were battling for a play-off place, while we were languishing down the
league in twelfth position. Southall Manager Max Howell made sixty-seven appearances for The Reds between 2009 and 2014 and has been in charge at Southall for over 300 games, guiding them to a narrow play-off semi-final defeat at Leatherhead last season. (2-3 on penalties). The current form table shows our visitors in thirteenth place with seven points - three points and five places below The Reds.
Last time out
I don’t believe I have enough space to cover everything that occurred at Hanworth Villa on
Saturday. The important thing is George Legg didn’t suffer any serious injury, following the
collision with Pierre Fonkeu in the first half. The whole team deserve tremendous credit for the way they responded to, what at the time were distressing scenes, and were close to earning all three points. A special mention to Harry Gallagher who took over in goal and
made some great saves and was only beaten from the spot. Sam Merson’s ninety-eighth
minute penalty, his twenty-fifth league goal of the season, meant the game ended all square. Southall were also involved in a high-scoring draw (3-3) at home against Rayners Lane. All six goals coming in the opening fifty minutes.
Previously
Both clubs were founded in 1871 and therefore it isn’t surprising that Southall are our most faced opposition during the past a hundred and forty-four years. This will be our hundred and thirty-first meeting and Southall hold the upper hand with sixty-one wins to forty-six. On Boxing Day, a George Moore goal gave us all three points at Burnham – Southall’s temporary home for this season.
The one to watch!
With thirteen league goals in thirty-seven appearances Brendan Matthew is top of Southall’s goalscoring chart and is the one to watch.
