Late Heartbreak as Reds Denied

In a finish that could well have come straight from last season's playbook, Uxbridge were denied a famous cup victory by a last-minute Farnborough goal in a pulsating, end-to-end cup tie at Honeycroft on Saturday. The one change from the midweek reverse at Berkhamsted saw Trevan Robinson get his first start for the Reds, with Eddie Allsopp moving to the bench.
The hosts could not have dreamed of a better start, breaking the deadlock after just four minutes. George Moore did brilliant work on the flank to carve out space and send a dangerous cross into the box. The delivery caused confusion in the Farnborough defence, allowing Toby Nnadozie to pounce on the loose ball and fire a fine shot into the far corner to give Uxbridge an early lead. Farnborough—who ply their trade in the National League South—responded well to the early setback and began testing the home side's resolve. In the 12th minute, Farnborough’s Sam Barratt curled a low, treacherous free-kick towards the near post, forcing Uxbridge goalkeeper Sam Morris into a smart save to push it away. However, the visitors’ persistence paid off 20 minutes in. Uxbridge failed to clear a cross into the box; Barratt's header came back off the woodwork, but the ball fell kindly to Mason Bloomfield, who reacted quickest to tuck away the rebound and draw the scores level at 1-1.
Uxbridge looked to restore their advantage before the break. Francis Amartey was causing problems down the left wing, and on 26 minutes he pulled back a sharp cross to Robinson, who spun well, but a defender managed to take the sting out of the shot, allowing the keeper to gather comfortably. At the other end, Alan Massey was required to coolly snuff out a dangerous Farnborough counter-attack, before Josh Keeya blasted a late first-half chance high and wide for the visitors.

The second half began at a frantic pace, with Uxbridge firmly on the front foot. Cole Brown went agonisingly close in the 52nd minute, pinging a shot inches past the post after the defence parted for him. Moments later, a Troy Perez-Duah corner picked out Robinson, whose powerful header was brilliantly palmed over the bar by Lucas Thomas in the Boro goal. Amartey then turned provider twice in quick succession, first picking out Moore for a header that was skewed wide, and then outmuscling his marker to deliver a fine cross that Moore took first time, but his connection was uncharacteristically poor and the ball flew wide.
Uxbridge did get the second goal their pressure deserved on the hour mark. The excellent Toby Nnadozie won back possession and launched a superb cross over to Amartey, who timed his run perfectly to latch onto the ball and smash it into the far corner with a fine finish to make it 2-1. Farnborough—as you expect from the higher-division side—refused to lie down, and the final 20 minutes became a breathless, end-to-end affair. The visitors went close in the 67th minute as Ryan Jackson fired wide when well placed, while Uxbridge missed a chance to put the game to bed when Moore and Amartey combined well to set up Nnadozie, who curled his effort over the bar.
As the clock ticked down, Farnborough poured forward. In the 80th minute, they beat the offside trap and Dajon Golding went clear, but Sam Morris raced out brilliantly to smother the danger before the backline cleared the resultant loose ball. Uxbridge still carried a threat, with Moore seeing a first-time shot deflected wide from a Ciaran Martin long throw. Two minutes from time, absolute chaos unfolded in the Uxbridge box; another Farnborough breakaway saw Michael Reindorf race through on goal—again Morris was on hand to make a crucial block—and the subsequent rebound fell to Rashawan Scott, who saw his shot deflected up onto the crossbar and away to safety.
In stoppage time, Uxbridge had a golden opportunity to seal passage into the next round as Moore flicked a lovely ball into the path of Luis Le Paih, who closed in on the keeper but could only drag his shot wide of the near post. It would prove to be a costly miss: after a Farnborough header went wide in the 93rd minute, the visitors launched one final attack. In the 94th minute, Farnborough won the ball on the right-hand side, and with space opening up, Reindorf was able to fire in an equaliser at the second attempt. With the whistle sounding moments afterwards, the teams must do it all again at Farnborough on Tuesday evening. Uxbridge, though, will take heart from matching their higher-league opponents all the way and will definitely feel they can still make it through the tie.
