Lacklustre Reds Fall to First Defeat

After eight matches, Uxbridge’s unbeaten run was always going to come to an end at some point. The fact it came at Berkhamsted—scene of one of last season's lowest points—means we haven’t returned from Hertfordshire with anything to show for it in the last five visits now, a run stretching back to December 2002. Danny Edwards kept faith with the same eleven who had brushed past Chichester on Saturday, as the Reds looked to extend their lead at the top of the table in the only match in the league on the night.

The visitors started the game on the front foot, looking the more likely side to break the deadlock early on. Just seven minutes in, Ciaran Martin surged down the left flank on the overlap and delivered a fine cross into the danger area, but Eddie Allsopp could only guide his header just over the crossbar. Berkhamsted took a while to settle, creating their first opening in the 14th minute. After winning a free-kick on the corner of the penalty box, the resulting effort was dragged well wide of the mark by Ryan Blake.

Despite enjoying the lion's share of early possession, Uxbridge struggled to break down a resolute Berkhamsted defence. The closest they came in the first period was in the 40th minute when a low ball into the Berko box caused a moment of genuine panic. Goalkeeper Hubert Gracyzk could only palm the ball out into the path of Francis Amartey, but the forward couldn't quite get the ball under control and his bundled effort scraped wide of the post. The half ended on a combative note, with George Moore going into the referee's notebook in the 45th minute for leaving a foot in on ex-Red James Gurteen. There was some initial concern the card would be of a different colour, but the half ended level on goals and personnel.

The second half began with Berkhamsted looking more assertive. Just five minutes after the restart, they won a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the Uxbridge box. While that effort came to nothing, the pressure quickly paid off. The resultant corner wasn’t cleared quickly, leading to Moore being penalised for a handball as he tried to clear the lines. Berkhamsted’s number 7, JJ Lacey, stepped up to the spot, kept his cool, and sent Sam Morris the wrong way to make it 1-0.

Bolstered by the goal, Berkhamsted pushed for a killer second. In the 60th minute, Blake broke through the lines, but Morris did brilliantly to get down quickly and block the shot at the near post. A minute later, another rapid Berko break beat Jack Burchell for pace, but Morris rushed off his line perfectly to close down the angle, forcing the shot wide. The pressure continued in the 74th minute when a threatening low cross had to be hastily scrambled behind by the Uxbridge defence.

Entering the final ten minutes, Uxbridge threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser. In the 83rd minute, Martin delivered another excellent ball into the box finding Moore on the turn, but the shot was blocked and cleared by the Berko backline. A minute later, a looping cross found substitute Charlie Stallard at the far post, but he could only direct his header wide. Moments later, Moore thought he had finally evaded the Berko rearguard when he broke past his defender and unleashed a fierce strike, only for the linesman's offside flag to go up to deny the chance.

After that flurry of half-chances, the match ultimately petered out. Berkhamsted professionally managed the closing stages to see out the victory. It was a match that won't live long in the memory, as the only shot on target from either side turned out to be the winning penalty.

Uxbridge’s attention now turns to the visit of Farnborough in the FA Cup on Saturday, where they will hope to quickly put this game behind them.
