Farnborough 0-2 Uxbridge | FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round Replay

After the late heartbreak on Saturday as Farnborough equalised with the last kick of the match, the replay held no fears for Uxbridge, who travelled down to The Blackwater Valley and overcame their Step 2 opponents with a composed and professional display on Tuesday evening. The one change to Saturday’s lineup saw Eddie Allsopp return in place of Trevan Robinson.

Farnborough saw plenty of the ball early on, with Josh Keeya firing wide in the 8th minute when well-placed. The visitors, though, were not here to make up the numbers; in the 12th minute, a slick passing move carved Farnborough open, but George Moore’s resultant shot could only force a comfortable save from Lucas Thomas in the Boro goal. Just two minutes later, Moore was at it again, cutting inside the box and unleashing a fierce drive that whistled just over the crossbar. He was to prove a real menace to the home side's backline all evening. Farnborough tried to assert themselves in the 18th minute when a long throw-in found Keeya in plenty of space; he took a touch and struck it low into the left side netting via a deflection.

It would be Uxbridge who struck first, though, in the 20th minute. Farnborough lost the ball in midfield thanks to good pressure from The Reds. Farnborough appealed for a foul, which never came, and Francis Amartey broke into the box. He showed ice-cold composure to round the onrushing goalkeeper and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to put Uxbridge 1-0 up in front of a very healthy travelling contingent of the Red Army.

The goal gave Uxbridge a real boost, and they could have increased their lead before the break. In the 28th minute, a dangerous corner found Toby Nnadozie on the edge of the penalty box, but his resulting header was deflected wide. Minutes later, a swinging Troy Perez-Duah free-kick found Luis Le Paih in space, who twisted brilliantly in the box only to see the ball fly wide. There would be one more chance for the visitors in the 40th minute when the Farnborough keeper, Thomas, horribly scuffed a clearance, but Eddie Allsopp couldn’t take advantage and his shot sailed over the bar, leaving the higher-league side happy to see the half-time whistle.

Realising their FA Cup campaign was on the line, Farnborough came out firing in the second half. After pulling a shot wide in the 50th minute, they came close to an equaliser in the 53rd minute, delivering a dangerous cross that Mason Bloomfield headed goalwards. Sam Morris, though, was quickest to the ball in the Uxbridge goal, pulling off a superb parry to clear the danger. Five minutes later, Morris was called into action again, punching the ball clear from Ryan Jackson as he closed in on the Reds goal.

Having weathered the early storm, Uxbridge doubled their advantage in the 60th minute when Le Paih pounced on a loose kick from Thomas. The Uxbridge midfielder drove forward and unselfishly squared the ball to Moore, who walked it into an empty net to make it 2-0 and cue more delirium from the travelling fans.

Far from sitting back, Uxbridge went for the jugular. In the 64th minute, the relentless Moore won the ball back in midfield and delivered a low-pinged cross to Amartey, who could only ripple the side netting as Thomas narrowed the angle. Desperate to avoid an early cup exit, Farnborough mounted an aerial assault, sending two powerful headers agonisingly wide in the 67th and 69th minutes, before Morris produced another spectacular diving save to deny a fine low volley in the 72nd minute from Rashawn Scott.

As the half wore on, Farnborough's frustrations started to show. In the 73rd minute, substitute Trevan Robinson looked to break clean through on goal but was hacked down by a cynical challenge, resulting in a yellow card. Robinson was proving a real handful, and in the 76th minute, he did superbly down the left to beat his man and cut a low cross back to Le Paih, whose deflected shot beat the keeper but clipped the top of the crossbar. The frustrations for the home side came to a head on 81 minutes as Goran Babic’s late challenge on Cole Brown resulted in a second yellow card, and he was sent off—though only after the referee had to be prompted that he had already been booked.

Down to 10 men, Farnborough’s cup hopes had vanished. Uxbridge looked to put a gloss on the scoreline in stoppage time as Robinson sparked a rapid counter-attack; his low shot was parried by Thomas into the path of Charlie Stallard, whose goal-bound header was somehow palmed away by the keeper, who then gathered the resultant follow-up. In the final seconds of the match, Robinson spotted the keeper off his line and attempted an audacious 40-yard lob that had the keeper scrambling frantically back, the ball drifting just wide.

It ended 2-0—a fantastic statement result for the club that sees Uxbridge progress into the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for the first time in eleven years, where they will face Hungerford Town at home on Saturday, October 3.
